As known as Museum Gajah (for the elephant statue that stands in front of the museum. the gift from Thailand) is an institution of cultural heritage studies and cultural educational information center and recreation, has an obligation to save and preserve objects of cultural heritage of Indonesia. Until now totaling 141,899-managed collection of objects, consisting of 7 types of collections of prehistoric, archaeological, ceramics, numismtik-heraldic, history, ethnography and geography (Source).

Me and OIOI (have i mentioned them before? if not, i will on the next post ;) ) arrived at this museum on 2 o’clock noon, although we knew that this museum open from 8 - 5 on the weekends (FYI, the museum is closed to the public on Mondays and National Holidays). After paid for the admission, its Rp5.000 for adult and Rp2.000 for children. And as for foreign visitors, the admission is Rp10.000. We took the tour by ourselves. I suggest, taking a guide if you never been here before. Many fine collections with their history didn’t explain well on the information board.
Entering the museum, you will find lots of statues of Kings, Gods and Goddess in Hinduism that was a major religion in Indonesia back then. The were Shiva, Wisnu and the very enormous statue of King Adityawarman. He was a Majapahit prime minister and later became King who ruled in West Sumatra.

The next room was a textiles room, shared with an exhibition room of Thailand. You can see different patterns of textile that came from all over Indonesia. Not only Batik, there are Songket and some fabrics that made from wood.
Right beside this room is pottery and ceramics room. Some of them influenced by China.
To the other room was about the ethnography of Indonesia. The room mainly shared about Indonesia’s ancestors, tradition, music, jewelery, clothes, transportation, etc.
In the next building, lied the precious collection of Indonesia. Golds, Ceramics, statues, traditional furnitures. The room which showed gold collection is closed one hour earlier, but we’re lucky that we could see the collections before it’s closed. they are beautiful. Rings, necklace, earrings and crowns. Authentically Indonesian.
I’m so happy spending 3 hours in this museum and get to know more about the ‘richness’ of my country. And you should too.. ;)
